A summer job $ 9 per hour does not sound like much, but 20 years Alexander Desmond has a lot to go on it.

He tripped over his years with the school district the city of Rochester, while faced with serious learning disabilities and the lack of support at home. He joined at the age of 16 years care and spent much of the last four years between jobs pinballing, apartments and a Gauntlet social facilities. Each with its own set of rules

"There is nothing too hard," he said. "Just stay focused on his (job) to do. ... I hope to do this year and continue to work hard to make the high school equivalency. I really want to be so bad."

The summer program is part of a contract to Rochester Rehab awarded that has built for disabled factory work-in which youth employment program city has the ability to attach to Rochester. DSCR students, they have those whose disabilities set up to get a state diploma "alternative assessment", rather than a Regents diploma.

"We want to shake the idea that these students are expected to survive ... Checked in Social Security," Gaither, who said the program is running in the field. "In some aspects, which are considered unemployed, but I only Rochester Rehab ask them to give them a chance."

20 hours per week, Alexander and colleagues make a difficult but necessary work, as well as some general education students work, employees and adults with and without disabilities. "This gives me better communication skills to work with people," the 16-year-old snow Anzeria said. "I have never worked in a factory."

Students alternative assessment, as they are known, usually go for 12 months a year in the school; Student workers go this summer in the classes in the morning and work in the afternoon. In the past their 'training' was often busy school work without pay.

After a stinging report in its technical training program in career and Edison, the district has taken steps to improve the transition services to work for students with and without disabilities. It brings the Edison campus as a school in 2015-16 together and made the effort to better adapt to the training of professionals with real jobs in the Rochester area.

A new director, Bradley Zilliox, lasted only a year and a half before being replaced by Walter Larkin Jr. Despite the optimism for the 2015-16 school year, the students of Edison and veteran director confirmed that there was a lot of cleaning to do when I arrived.

"When I left (in 2005 as an administrator), which was very dangerous, and when I was stronger," he said. "The students have changed, the demographic and social networks changed was was obviously difficult for me, not that school is out of control, .. it was that the students came to the rescue"

The suspensions in the first half of the year were high but sharp in spring, after all, it is the sum of 2014-15.
