A resident of Salmon Arm offers private lessons in two very different areas: classical music training and martial arts.

Lindsey Christian-Hack began taking violin and kickboxing lessons at the age of seven. Her mother's activities should not broaden her horizons but help Lindsey cope with her various learning difficulties. The problems occurred only in the kindergarten. After sitting in a classroom with his mother Vicki, he noticed that Lindsey was having difficulty following a series of instructions from his teacher, and looked at his classmates to find out what he should do.

"I just did not know what was going on, I just did not get it," Vicki said about Kelsey's teaching experience.

At first we thought the topic was his audience. After Lindsey's hearing had been checked and the results showed no signs of hearing loss, her mother was even more confused. Lindsey was removed from public school in first grade to teach at home. At the same time she gave kickboxing and violin lessons.

"I always think that music is great for learning, good for the mind, and I wanted it to get used to loud noises and be played by people," Vicki said.

Another more detailed listening test was done in Kamloops and the couple finally got his answer. Lindsey had a moderate auditory processing disorder, essentially a delay between hearing spoken words and understanding their meaning. However, this mess did not mean that Lindsey was slow. It turned out that Lindsey fell into a category called gifted or twice exceptional learning. This is a phenomenon in which a gifted child also has learning problems.

Around this time, Lindsey was also diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive and involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. Lindsey's tics were mostly physical and over time they became so serious that they influenced his lifestyle.

"He just made progress until he could not concentrate on a table to get the job done," said Lindsey's mother.

Combining problems that affect his academics, Vicki made the decision to teach Lindsey at home. In a substantially stress-free environment, Lindsey was able to better manage her tics and receive more specific instructions to overcome her auditory processing disorder.

Lindsey was an excellent student in the home school and quickly advanced in the public school system for two years beyond her age group. After graduation, his home school offered to pay for one academic year. Before she went to high school, Lindsey had to be re-tested to see if her auditory processing disorder had worsened. Although her mother learned that the disorder was not repairable, the second test showed a complete cure.

Lindsey attended a biology class at Okanagan College and, despite not attending high school labs, completed the course and earned all the necessary qualifications for his final lab exam. Although she still has a keen interest in science, Lindsey wanted to focus more on her music and martial arts, which she said contributed significantly to overcoming her learning difficulties.

While studying at home, Lindsey plunged into both art forms. He got his first black belt at the age of 12 and the second at the age of 14, when he switched to a form of kickboxing with a light touch. Since then Lindsey has been in contact with Kickboxing and Karate. At age 17, Lindsey began with Barry Adkins, Senior Martial Arts Instructor at White Crane in Kamloops, where he continues to train.

In private lessons, Lindsey will teach a martial arts brand focused exclusively on combat. No belt test, no shape and no tillage. Only standing skills.

While at home, Lindsey also received her associate certificate for violin performance from the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT). She teaches music theory up to the level ARCT and is qualified as a piano teacher until the 8th grade of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Even Lindsey creates the surprising dichotomy between the two art forms, but takes the disciplines energetically.

"You really need to change your attitude, it's like changing the hat, and for someone like me, who has to be very busy all the time, there's a break for me all," Lindsey said.

Lindsey believes her persistence in learning difficulties will be an asset to her as a martial arts and music teacher.

"I think that through the experiences I have made, I will be able to interact with these students and discover different ways to teach different people," Lindsey said. "I can adapt to all the challenges my students face."

With her own lessons in martial arts and private music, the 21-year-old uses her violin and her piano in music videos. Lindsey is not satisfied with her piano and violin certificate and is also working on her vocals and her guitar, hoping to play in a rock band somewhere in her future.
